The town of Seggiano that is at 490 m. of altitude is in the province of Grosseto and has a population of about 950 inhabitants. It was founded at the time of the Etruscans and it is set amidst beautiful landscapes. The Temple of the Madonna della Carità and the Castle Potentino can be visited in this town.

The first traces of human settlements, found during some archaeological excavations, date to the IV century B.C., that is to say the late Etruscan period. Later, the Romans invaded this area and they gave this place its toponym, linked to the worship of the god Janus. In the Middle Ages, namely in the year 903, some historical documents cited Seggiano. A parchment reports that the "casale Seganu" was a small village under the authority of the Abbey of San Salvatore.
Since the XIII century it was within the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Sant' Antimo for a short time. Around 1265, the Republic of Siena intervened in Seggiano where it both instituted administrative bodies and reinforced the defensive structures of the town.
The Sienese period of Seggiano was characterised by the predominance of the families belonging to the new aristocracy of the city, such as the Salimbeni (present between the XIII-XIV centuries) and the Ugurgieri (its governors in the XV century). Together with Siena, Seggiano became part of the Tuscan Grand Duchy, headed by the Medici, around the first half of the XVI century.
The castle of Potentino was the protagonist of Seggiano's medieval history. It was built around the year 1000 and it was mentioned in the documents since 1042. At the beginning, this fortress belonged to the Abbey of San Salvatore, too, before Siena took it in the XIII century.
The territory of Seggiano also housed the famous figure of San Bernardino from Siena, who spent his training years in the Franciscan coenoby of the Colombaio. The latter can still be visited today and it is not far from the chief town.
