The province of Grosseto stretches along the Tyrrhenian coast, and it’s characterized by several high quality small dockyards. The foundation of Grosseto dates back to middle ages, the town is rich in beautiful buildings and churches, like the cathedral and St.Peter’s church; today it is an important agricultural and industrial centre, still surrounded by its ancient city walls.
The town – together with other centres like Massa Marittima, Monterotondo Marittimo, Montieri and Roccastrada – belongs to the Maremma territory, stretching from the hills “Metallifere” to the coast by the gulf of Follonica. Two important tourist attractions are in the region: the mount Amiata and the headland of Argentario, with the well-known seaside towns Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano.
The town by the mount Argentario is characterized by the fortress (Fortezza Spagnola) rising above the city centre and the great square Piazzale dei Rioni, where the marine banner takes place every year on the 15th August. Out of the castle we can walk along the scenic route and admire the beautiful coastal landscape.
The whole Maremma territory is rich in archaeological finds; the towns of Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano still keep their medieval structures, though being in the middle of an Etruscan area. Nature plays here an important role as well: several nature parks are in this area, amongst them the park of Uccellina and the grand-ducal pinewood of Marina di Telamone.
Other noteworthy tourist centres in the area are: Saturnia, in the heart of Maremma with its famous thermal baths; the nature reserve by the lake Burano (by Orbetello) and the beach Cala di Forno with its tower by Magliano in Toscana.
