The municipality of Vergemoli is close by the Apuane Alps and is in the province of Lucca. It is located at an altitude of 595 m asl and it has a population of about 400 inhabitants. This town is the ideal place for excursionists and nature lovers, but it also has precious historical architectures.
Inside its territory, with origins dating to the X century, the churches of Sant' Antonio, San Quirico and San Giuditta, as well as the Fontana Bernarda, can be admired. Instead, the village of Fornovalasco, the church of the Vergine della Neve (in the hamlet of Campolemisi) and the suggestive Grotta del Vento, one of the most enchanting places of the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuane, can be visited in the neighbourhoods.
The origins of the first settlement fade in the difficult times of the Middle Ages, but there is information from documents dating to the X century. Then, the village was called Vallis Gemini (twin valleys) to put into evidence its geographical position. In effect, it is set between two valleys, surrounded by the Apuane Alps and crossed by the Turrite di Petrosciana, a series of small streams that flow into the Serchio river.
This town had the same destiny as the majority of the towns in Lucca. Families connected to the Republic of Lucca administered it until the first half of the XV century. In that period, after long and violent battles fought between Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Modena, the Estensi family, with the help of the worn-out Garfagnana population, made an ultimate manoeuvre and annexed almost all the towns of the area, including Vergemoli.
The Estensi reorganized and strengthened the castle and carried out renovation works in the Romanesque church in 1638. The main activity of this town has always been linked to the exploitation of its water resources. Workshops, paper factories and mills had been using the watercourses of the Turrite river until the beginning of the XX century.
In the second postwar period, instead, the streams poured into the artificial lake of Trombacco created by the dam that supplies water power to the power station of Trombacco.
