The municipality of Vecchiano is set in the Pisan plain and almost 12000 people live here. It houses precious architectures, such as the Church of Santa Maria in Castello, the Etruscan Fortress and the Castle of Avane.
As testified by various archaeological finds, the origin of the first settlement in Vecchiano dates to the Etruscan period.
This medieval village has very ancient origins and it was already quoted in a document of 762 A.D. At that time, it was constituted of two churches, basically, that were located on the territory, and of some adjoining estates that were granted by the noblemen of the country of Lucca and by the Episcopate of Lucca.
The town rose between the area ruled by Lucca and the space controlled by the republic of Pisa. The latter got the territory of Vecchiano by forceful action and a castle was built here. Therefore, the fortress became one of the main sceneries of the bloody fights between the two cities, since Lucca could not accept the development of a Pisan stronghold inside its ancient estates.
Yet, the pulling down of the walls and of the sighting tower that protected the castle was due to the Luchino Visconti's troops from Milan, which assaulted and looted the village in 1345.
Once the Lombard army's incursions ended in Tuscany, the citadel recovered its strength under the control of Pisa and the ruins of the tower constituted the foundation for the town's bell tower.
The year 1406 marked the passage for Vecchiano and for many other Pisan communities from the Pisan rule to the Florentine control.
In the Medici's programme, there was the encouragement of the agricultural activity in those rural areas that had been withdrawn to Pisa. Thus, the reclamation works started by the Pisans in the marshy areas surrounding Vecchiano were finished.
This town had the same destiny as Florence until they entered the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
In the XX century, other activities parallel to agriculture developed.
In the first years of this century, some limestone mines started to function, while the primary sector specialized in the fruit and vegetable production.
After World War II, a process of industrialization linked to the sectors of building materials, clothes and metal manufacturing began. The town also developed the tourism sector thanks to the closeness of Marina di Vecchiano to the sea.
