Sinalunga Tuscany

The municipality of Sinalunga is in the province of Siena at an altitude of 364 m asl and it has a population of about 11000 inhabitants. Sinalunga is well-known for its numerous frescoes as the "Benvenuto" by Giovanni, the "Saints" by Tito and Sodoma that can be seen here. Furthermore, the medieval villages of Rigomagno, Farnetella and Scrofiano can be visited, too.

Sinalunga, called Asinalunga for a long time, was founded around the VII century and it started to be filed in the historical archives only since the XII century. At that time, its territory was one of the Scialenga Counts' dominions and it was within the jurisdiction of Siena. On the contrary, the parish of the town, dedicated to St. Peter "ad Mensulas", was inside the town's territory and it also began to be quoted in the records since the VIII century.
Under the aegis of Siena, Sinalunga early became a bordering stronghold against the historical enemies of the Palio's city.
In 1269, when the clash between the republic of Siena and the republic of Florence had been raging for a long time, it became a safe shelter for the Sienese routing after the disastrous battle of the Colle.
In 1289, Siena decided to occupy and annex this fortified village inside its borders.
The inhabitants of Sinalunga uselessly reacted against this decision in several occasions, for instance when they gave hospitality to the exile Deo Tolomei, who also rebelled against Siena and established its power in Sinalunga until 1330.
The city, once it fell under the Senese, was then handed over to Galeazzo Visconti in 1399. He started the most important fortification works but no traces of this fortress were left.
In effect, in 1553 the imperial Spanish troops occupied the castle giving it to the Medicis. In 1590, the Grand Duke Ferdinand destroyed the imposing defences of the city.
The town acquired its current name only in 1864, a few years after it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
