The church of Santo Stefano was the first parish risen in Serravalle in the second half of the XIII century. Yet, other parishes were already present in Vinacciano, Groppoli and Casalguidi.
Its façade still has its Romanesque structure that has been well preserved despite its following changes. Instead, the bell tower was built over a pre-existing defensive turret of the castle and its passage still exists, too. The Panciatichi crowded it during their fights against the Cancellieri in the XVI century. The latter set a fire to conquer the tower and start the battle and they damaged both the structure of the tower and the nearby church.
After the fire of 1501, the building was restructured and embellished with decorations and equipment, such as the organ of the XVIII century coming from the renowned shop of the Agati. Inside, the statues of San Ludovico di Tolosa and of Sant' Antonio Abate, can be admired. They are earthen works coming from the school of the Della Robbia, ceramists who worked all over Tuscany for many centuries.
The inhabitants of Serravalle particularly worship San Lodovico, who is said to have appeared in 1306 to avoid an assault by Lucca. This is why Giovanni Della Robbia represented the saint in a glazed sculpture with a model of the town in his hand, which substituted the shepherd present in the original project. This statue was realized not later than 1628.
Among the equipment, the wooden crucifix on the high altar, carried out by the artists of Pistoia Giovanni Zeti in 1619, stands out. More works are kept in the chapel of the Ss. Sacramento. A painting representing the "Madonna con Bambino in mezzo ai Santi", once set above the high altar, is kept in the sacristy. Restoration works have highlighted the presence of two figures that probably represented the people who had commissioned this work and that had been erased with the superimposition of the image of Santa Lucia.
