Serravalle Pistoiese Tuscany

he town of Serravalle Pistoiese is in a strategic position for anyone who wants to visit Tuscany: in effect, it is near the most famous cities of art, such as Lucca, Pistoia, Pisa and Florence. The church of Santo Stefano, the Rocca of Castruccio Castracani, the Torre del Barbarossa and the Villa il Cassero can be visited in Serravalle.

The medieval village rose around the parishes of the area in the year 1000, but it assumed a remarkable importance since the XII century, only, when Pistoia started to build the first fortifications. The remain of the commonly known "Rocca Vecchia" is represented by the Torre del Barbarossa that was raised in 1177 built on the Southern side of the stronghold and that has recently been restored.
The strategic and military importance of Serravalle increased with the growing of the rivalry between the "black" Guelfs and the "white" Guelfs at the end of the XIII century. In 1302, the town fell in the hands of the powerful lords Malaspina from Lucca who started the construction of a new fortification. The "Rocca Nuova" then became the residence of the Ghibelline leader Castruccio Castracani.
After his death occurred in 1328, Serravalle was at the centre of a long dispute between Pistoia and Florence, with the latter that definitively established its presence here in around the half of the XIV century.
With the following annexation of all the dominions of Pistoia in the Republic, Serravalle was involved in the history of Florence and experienced one last terrible war in the XVI century and later the Grand Duchy of Tuscany was created. Under the Medicean seigniory, first, and the Lorraine one, later, Serravalle lived the modern age in peace and political stability, until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
