Scansano Tuscany

In the town of Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, the Convent of Petreto, the archaeological zone of "Ghiaccio Forte" and the Roman Villa in the countryside of Scansano that belonged to the Anicia family can be visited. Scansano is set at 500 m a.s.l. of altitude and it has a population of more than 4,000 inhabitants.

The first documented human settlements in the town of Scansano are to be traced back to the I century a.D., when the Roman family of the Anicia was present in the territory. St. Ansano, one of the first Christian martyrs in Tuscany, belongs to this family, too. Nevertheless, the documents that testify the presence of a village only date to 1188, when its name appeared in a papal bull signed by Clemens III.
Another document of 1274 confirms the dominion of the Aldobrandeschi in the territory. In effect, this act deals with the division of the family into two branches, the one of Sovana and of Santa Fiora. The latter had Scansano among its properties. The town's position near the border with the Republic of Siena set it at the centre of the fights between Siena and the Santa Fiora, which culminated with a pillage carried out by the Sienese in 1330.
One year later, the Aldobrandeschi formally submitted to Siena and they got the castle of Scansano back with the obligation not to rebuild its walls. In 1333, Scansano became the seat of the "Estatatura" and Grosseto, going through decadence at the time, was given the judicial and administrative duties. Thus, the town became the most important centre in Maremma until 1897.
The dynasty of the Aldobrandeschi dominated the town until 1439, when Scansano became part of the lands of the Sforza after the marriage of Cecilia Aldobrandeschi and Bozio di MuzioAttendolo Sforza di Cotignola and until the first years of the XVII century. The cession of the Sforza's lands of Scansano and Pomonte to Cosimo II de' Medici and the consequent incorporation of these centres into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany date to 1615. The gate to the old town centre that once was the entrance to the town still keeps the emblem of this noble Florentine lineage.
With the extinction of the Medici in 1738, the Hapsburg-Lorraine took the power. In 1776, Scansano became the seat of a Town-Hall and it obtained its status of autonomous town with the Leopoldine reforms of 1783. It assumed its current extension with the integration of the villages of Cotone, Montorgiali, Montiano, Poggioferro, Pancole, Collecchio, Polveraia, Montepò and Pomonte.
