Rosignano Marittimo Tuscany

The town of Rosignano Marittimo, a medieval centre on the Tyrrhenian coast, is famous as a seaside resort and for the quality of its waters. Moreover, it gives the possibility to visit the Archaeological Museum and the Torre del Faro in Vara.

The origins of the town are very ancient and they are linked to the Roman family of the Rasinia, from which also its local toponym derived. Documented news dates to 762 A.D., the time of the Lombard dominion. From the X century on, the village was under the Marquisate of Tuscany, forst, and, later, it was incorporated in the territories of the republic of Pisa.
In the XV century, after a long period of progressive decadence of this sea-faring republic, the town of Rosignano entered the Florentine Republic together with the other Pisan dominions. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of the village showed their discontent to the new seigniory and, in 1431, they rebelled and called the Visconti's Milanese troops to help them. Yet, Florence could get the territory back under its control after two years and later fought against Pisa for its possession until 1509, at least, the year Pisa was definitively annexed.
Rosignano followed the Grand Duchy's destiny until the Unity of Italy in 1860, when it was given to the province of Pisa. Its citizens were not satisfied with their new arrangement and decided to give themselves over autonomously to the district of Livorno. The Italian state ratified this decision in 1925, only. Rosignano still keeps the towers of the castle, which the Medici built in the XVI century to garrison the sea and protect the town from the pirates' menace, as an evidence of its ancient pomp.
