The town of Reggello is in the province of Florence at 390 m. of altitude and has a population of about 14,000 inhabitants. This is a centre rich in villas and castles and it is known for the Abbey of Vallombrosa and for the Mostra dell'Olio.
In the ancient times, the territory of Reggello was crossed by the way that linked Fiesole to Arezzo and it was one of the most ancient settlement places of the Etruscans. Also the Romans used the track to transform it into a branch of the Cassia way since the understood the importance of this way.
The ancient name of Reggello, namely Castelnuovo di Cascia, derives from the name of the Roman road that distinguished it from Castelvecchio di Cascia, a stronghold belonging to the Counts Guidi. The news on the ancient village come from two papal bulls of 1103 and of 1134. Still today, the Bear stands on the emblem of the town. This animal was the symbol of the League of Cascia, a political and commercial union of parishes and small rural towns that was born to defend the countryside. Yet, the dominion of the republic of Florence was soon established in the area and it was followed by the process of fortification that in the XIV century involved an incredible number of castles and small towns in the Florentine countryside.
The town's ancient name changed at the time of the Grand Duchy, when the Lorraine governed Tuscany. It was during Pietro Leopoldo' regency in 1773 that the toponym "Regello" was established. Its origin derives from the word "rege". It indicated the properties previously owned by the Lombards, who had lived in this area after the fall of the Roman Empire.
In the XIX century, the population of Reggello almost exclusively practised agriculture. Even if the town had not real anti-Fascists clandestine organizations, it was interested by a people's movement dependent upon the Catholic party who had governed the town until 1923.
In 1943, the "people's party" organized a procession for peace, during which clashes with fascists took place. Anyway, in general, Regello avoided the most violent retaliations of the Nazi-Fascists during the civil war. After the war, the depopulation phenomenon that interested all the rural towns of the Florentine area took place. This tendency changed in the 60's when an industrial plant rose in Reggello.
