The ancient medieval village of Poppi is one of the best-preserved examples of "walled cities" overlooked by the imposing castle of the Counts Guidi, which is in excellent conditions and can still be visited. Inside the walls of Poppi that is in the province of Arezzo the Oratory of the Madonna del Morbo can be visited.

In the XII century, the name of Poppi started to appear in documents. The most important one dates to 1191. It is an imperial act with which Henry IV confirms the counts Guidi's dominion of over a series of territories and castles between Tuscany and the Romagna region, including Poppi. For three centuries the Guidi dominated upright over Poppi and its population and finished important fortification works such as the walls in 1261 and the stronghold.
The subjugation of the powerful Guidi of Poppi to the Guelf Florentine Republic dates to 1266. Before the end of the century, Poppi entered the Italian history thanks to the battle of Campaldino that took place at a few kilometres from the village on 11 June 1289 and determined the beginning of Florence's definitive supremacy over Arezzo, on one side, and the superiority of the Guelfs over the Ghibellines.
Yet, the passage of Poppi to Florence consolidated in 1440, only, after the decisive victory of Florence in Anghiari. Thus, Poppi became the seat of a vicariate that administered justice inside the whole Casentino.
This town, that was completely included in the Grand Duchy state founded by the Medici and ruled by the Hapsburg-Lorraine, finally lived some centuries of peace and development during which the traditional economy based on woods and sheep-breeding joined wool craft and wood manufacture. The latter were connected to an itinerant trade of tools and other furnishings and fittings.
The production of wood manufactures later became a tradition that every year was renovated in some places in Poppi. Recently, the town entered the National Park of the Forests of the Casetino, of the Falterona Mount and of Campigna. Therefore, one can decide for a full immersion in nature by choosing one of the many excursions paths available to tourists.
