Monterotondo Marittimo Tuscany

The town of Monterotondo Marittimo is in the province of Grosseto at 593 m. a.s.l. and it has a population of about 1000 inhabitants. Near there is the Boraciferous Lake, where the natural phenomenon of the boraciferous geysers can be seen, while the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassine can be seen in the town.

The Castle of Monterotondo, of Medieval origins, was a direct property of the Counts Alberti and their main residence since the XII century. An imperial diploma Frederick Barbarossa issued in 1163 cites the castle and reads that the territories of Monterotondo had to be ceded to this powerful feudatory dynasty.
In 1209, the count Rainaldo degli Alberti went under the protection of Massa Marittima, a rich centre that proclaimed its communal autonomy after a few years.
Since 1261, Massa Martana obtained the direct control of the small village and bought it directly from Reinaldo's heirs. The hopes of the inhabitants of Monterotondo and of its rulers to avoid the dominion of the Sienese Republic definitively vanished in 1335, when the whole jurisdiction of Massa was submitted to Siena. Yet, the town also obtained the seat of a vicariate and the restructuring of a castle, which the Spanish troops assaulted and destroyed at the half of the XVI century. thanks to them, the Medici annexed all the Sienese territory inside the Tuscan Grand Duchy.
