Information and guides for tourism and holidays

Massa Carrara Area Tuscany

Green and blooming valleys in spring, snow-white mountains in winter, hills with vineyards on the coast, this is the wonderful district around Massa Carrara.

The region called Lunigiana lies between Liguria and Emilia Romagna, a well-known, charming area in the middle of a flourishing nature, with olive trees, chestnut trees and pines along the valleys, overlooking the Apennines and the mountains called "Alpi apuane".
Fascinating old villages like Tresana, Fivizzano, Pontremoli and Mulazzo, with their castles and Romanic churches, alternate with natural parks along the territory: the Regional park of Alpi Apuane is an ideal place for every fan of trekking, with many paths for walkers, horse riders and bikers too. Other important national parks in this area are the National Park of Tosco-Emilia Apennine and the Padula Park, near the town of Carrara.
The city of Massa Carrara is world famous because of its precious marbles, quarried by the mountains Alpi Apuane, as well as by Fivizzano, Montignoso and Colonnata. One of the best known Italian culinary specialities is the famous "Lardo di Colonnata" (i.e. bacon fat), which you can taste here, together with other local specialties like acacia and chestnut honey from Lunigiana and precious DOC wines from Colli Apuani and Luni.
