The municipality of Marciana Marina is the smallest in the Island of Elba. Inside, the Cotone quarter, an ancient medieval fishing village, can be visited. Near it, there is the Torre Saracena, built by the Pisans in the XII century, while at a few kilometres' distance, there is St. Cerbone's church.
This municipality has officially existed since 1951, when it got separated from the municipality of Marciana together with a small north-west part of the Isola d' Elba's territory.
The Cotone quarter is the original unit of Marciana Marin. It was chosen by a fishing community in the Middle Ages, because its geographic position made it particularly eligible for docking boats. In order to build the first living units, the fishermen and their families first had to reclaim an insalubrious swamp.
The history of Marciana is almost told by the overhanging Saracenic Tower.
The presence of this huge cylindrical defence structure testifies the Pisans' hegemony over the Elba island immediately after the year 1000. Instead, its peculiar defence structure reminds us of the assaults by the cruel Saracenic pirates who had terrified the inhabitants of Cotone and Marciana for many centuries.
The tower was an important sighting spot for the enemies' ships and the alarm was given from here not only to this small village along the coast but also to the inhabitants of Marciana Castello.
