Chitignano Tuscany

The town of Chitignano is in the Valdarno of the Casentino. It is set at 282 m. a.s.l. of altitude and it has a population of about 1,000 inhabitants. By visiting Chitignano, the castle of the counts Ubertini and the Parish of San Vincenzo can be admired here.

A diploma of the German emperor Otto I dating to 967 cited Chitignano for the first time as a feud of the Lombard-born vassal Goffredo di Ildebrando. Later, the territory of Chitignano was handed down to the counts of Chiusi and then to the Ubertini, who got the power in the area until 1325. In that year, the dominion over the castle passed to the bishop of Arezzo Guido Tarlati who was the ruler of this place for a long time.
The Ubertini governed Chitignano again in 1384, but this time in limited partnership on behalf of the Florentine republic which had annexed its territories. The castle remained a property of the Ubertini for almost four-hundred years despite the alliance they stipulated with the Visconti of Milan, obliging the Florentines to intervene in 1402.
Almost at the end of the XVIII century, the territory was reorganized with the abolition of feudalism inspired by the ruler's "enlightened" policy. Thus, Chitignano became an autonomous "comunitas". Between the XVIII and the XIX century, the town went through the occupation of the French and of the Kingdom of Etruria before the Congress of Vienna of 1815 ceded it to the Lorraine. In 1860, the town entered the Kingdom of Italy.
In the last centuries, the local economy has thriven thanks to the cultivation of tobacco, of mulberry-trees for silk worms and to the trade of gun powder. Instead, its woods have always characterized the working life of Chitignano, since it has always supplied timber, vegetal coal, chestnuts and mushrooms to local markets. The traditional agriculture based on vine and olives, is also rich.
