The town of Cavriglia is in the province of Arezzo at 308 m. a.s.l. of altitude and it has a population of about 8,000 inhabitants. It is immersed in nature and offers its visitors the excursion beauties of the Natural Park and the architectural ones of the church of Santa Maria.
It is certain that the first settlement in the territories of Cavriglia was of Roman origins, since it has been demonstrated that the area corresponding to the current town was crossed by an ancient and very important track at the time which linked the Valdarno to the Val di Greve. The remotest documental information, yet, date to the X century and they refer to the parish of San Giovanni a Cavriglia and to some donations the town received from it.
The seigniory of the Firidolfi-Ricasoli controlled the area for a long time. Once it passed under the dominion of the Ubertini, of the Pazzi and of the Franzesi, it was one of the Ghibelline strongholds with the castle of Montaio in the area of Arezzo. In the modern times, the town started to enter not contact with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and it entered the "comunitas" of San Giovanni in Valdarno. The town detached from it in 1774.
