Mulino del Bonano

The Mulino del Bonano, belonging to the Bardelli family, is located in the Valdarno Casentinese provincial road, n. 59, just before the bridge over the homonym stream, near the border with the town of Talla.

It dates to the end of the XVIII century and, since it is adjacent to imposing chestnut woods, it played an important role in the local economy, during famine in particular, when chestnut flour represented an important kind of food for the populations of the area. The Mulino was constituted of two grindstones that milled the various kinds of flour separately.
It was restored in 1999 and it started to work again using its old components, namely a horizontal wood bucket which is activated by the water of the Bonano stream. The water is channelled by the "berignolo" that begins from the ancient ironworks at about 300 metres upstream and it is collected in a water basin called "botaccio".
The mill is operated by the traction of a wooden lever that lifts a grid and allows the water of the mill pond to drain away into the bucket at a high pressure. This way, the bucket supplies the energy sufficient to make the millstone spin.
Still today, chestnuts and corn are milled to produce very fine flours as in the most rigorous Tuscan tradition. It is possible to buy chestnut and corn flours.
The millstone is available for guided and also didactic tours by calling the Bardelli family at 0575597465.
