Carmignano Tuscany

The town of Carmignano with uncertain Roman origins is in the province of Prato and has a population of about 12000 inhabitants. In the town there are the Medicean Villa "La Ferdinanda" ordered by Ferdinando I, and the stronghold fortified by the inhabitants of Pistoia in the XII century.

The first historical sources on Carmignano date to the year 998. The imperial diploma by means of which Otto III reiterated the possession of the town by the Pistoia bishopric, namely the upright ruler of the area until 1125, dates to this year. In the same year, the Florentines withdrew the village to the bishop Ildebrando but Pistoia conquered it with the aim to transform it into one of its bulwarks on the border between Pistoia and Florence. Both Florence and Prato uselessly tried to conquer the town several times until 1228, when the Florentine Republic seized its castle.
Thus, the winners proceeded to the dismantling of the fortress, but its defensive structures were restored a few years later. In 1301, the king of France Charles of Valois gave Carmignano to one of his most devoted supporters, Musciatto Franzesi, banker and ruler of Staggia. Fiver years later, after the fall of Pistoia, Franzesi gave the city back to Florence. The inhabitants of the village, tired of the continuous external interferences, rebelled in 1314 and gave the seigniory of Carmignano back to Pistoia.
Nevertheless, it was an unhappy parenthesis characterised by Filippo Tedici's tyranny. Therefore, in 1325, the inhabitants of Carmignano rebelled and called Florence back to rule their city. Yet, the Republic had to face the Ghibelline leader Castruccio Castracani, who had been defeated and driven out of Carmignano in 1343, only, to take possession of the town.
Under the Florentine potestà the town started a long period of political and institutional stability and continuity that led the town to enter the Tuscan Grand Duchy under the Medici and the Hapsburg-Lorraine, first, and the Kingdom of Italy, later, in 1860.
