Careggine Tuscany

The town of Careggine is in the province of Lucca at 882 m. a.s.l. and its presence makes Lucca a renown base for ski-lovers. It has a population of about 600 inhabitants and a castle and the parish of the Saints Peter and Paul enrich the town's old centre.

The latter is one of the most ancient Romanesque parishes in the Garfagnana. It is a Lombard architecture founded not later than the VII-VIII century and its structure was subjected to restructuring and numerous restorations in the years. Remarkably important works from a historical and artistic point of view, such as the stone altars and a XVI-century statue of St. Anthony probably created by Vincenzo Civitali, can be admired while visiting the parish. On one of the stones constituting the external wall there is also an ancient and precious rupestrian engraving dating to Prehistory.
The village originated in the VIII century a.D. More precisely, around the year 720, the still existing parish rose and many other churches of the neighbourhoods depended upon it in the following years. At the beginning, Careggine was included in the pope's area of influence. In the XIII century, its nobles even swore loyalty to Pope Gregory IX and they received a huge feud of the Garfagnana in exchange which they governed until the XIV century.
The numerous seigniories that ruled in the XV century in the territory and the phenomenon of brigandage caused a quite turbulent time that soon ended when Careggine spontaneously annexed to the Estensi. They were the representatives of a historical lineage who dominated the Emilia region and upper Tuscany in the Middle Ages until the half of the XIX century, exception made for a short period of Napoleonic domination between the XVIII and the XIX century.
In 1859, the town detached from this seigniory to be annexed to the growing Kingdom of Italy. Careggine was first incorporated in the province of Massa Carrara and then it was definitively integrated in the province of Lucca by Royal Decree in 1923.
