The municipality of Caprese Michelangelo is in the province of Arezzo at an altitude of 653 m. asl. and it has a population of about 1500 inhabitants.
"When the Italian peninsula began to be populated, Caprese Michelangelo was a thick scrub of beeches, chestnuts and oaks. Yet, bronze finds discovered in the area surrounding the Castle and the excavations near Tifi show that these territories were already inhabited and civilized in the Etruscan and Roman periods.
Authoritative scholars consider the Caprese Castle as the place where the Goths' king Totila died in 552 A.D.
After 568 A.D., the Lombards' domination started and it had a strong and long-lasting influence on the local societies. This is testified by many place names such as Mezzano (Dicciano), Agitone (Giglione), Perello (Priello), etc., by the VII-century stone pluteus, decorated with bas-relief and found during the renovation works in San Cristoforo's Church, and by the documents of the Archivio Capitolare Aretino where the "Caprise' s Lombards" are cited.
The Counts Ranieri di Galbino were the rulers of Caprese in the XI and XII centuries until 1226, when the town went under the protection of Arezzo because of the fights between the feudatories. In 1260, the Counts Guidi di Romena took possession of the territory but in 1324 the Bishop of Arezzo Guido Tarlati conquered the castle after a three-month siege.
At the end of some decades of anarchy, in 1384 the inhabitants of Caprese voluntarily yielded to the Republic of Florence. The control over Florence was sanctioned in 1386 with the institution of a town hall that was in force until 1783.
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in Caprese on March 6, 1475, when his father Ludovico was the Podestà of the town.
In 1737, at the end of the centuries-old period of the Medicis, the territory passed under the administration of the Asburgo-Lorena (rivedere la frase in italiano)
With the plebiscite of 1860, Caprese and the whole Tuscany entered the Kingdom of Sardinia and, later, the Kingdom of Italy. During this period, Caprese acquired more prestige thanks to Giovanni Santini's figure and work (Caprese 1787 - Noventa Padovana 1877). He was an astronomer and a mathematician, eminent in teaching and research.
By royal decree in February 9, 1913, the name of Michelangelo was added to the ancient name of the town, as an indication that the artist was born here"
Toscana Viva thanks Mr. Vincenzo Desiderio and the Municipality of Caprese Michelangelo for the information present in this page.
The memory of Michelangelo Buonarroti still lives in San Giovanni's Church and inside the castle walls that contain the Museo Michelangiolesco:
His birth home, the Palazzo Clusini that today is the seat of the Municipality, the Sale della Rocca where there are ancient plaster casts donated by the Gallerie Fiorentine and the suggestive open-air Sculpture Museum.
The traces of this intense history can be still admired on the most meaningful monuments of Caprese: the medieval fortress, built in the X century, the Camaldolese Abbey of Tifi, the Parish of San Cassiano, exalted by the evocative power of its environment, the romantic San Cristoforo's Church and the Madonna della Selva's Sanctuary.
The places that bear the witness of St. Frances's passage during his travels from Assisi to the Sacro Monte della Verna rouse our admiration and respect. They are St. Paul's Church, the Chapel of Zenzano, the Eremo della Casella.
