The town of Capolona is in the province of Arezzo. It has a population of about 5,000 inhabitants and the abbey of Campoleone, built in the XI century, and the church of Santa Lucia are set in the town's territory.
The village was first cited in a document dating to 943 a.D. by means of which the emperors Ugo and Lotario settled that a landowner from Arezzo was the proprietor of "Campus Leonis". The original built-up area grew up around the abbey of St. Gennaro founded in the X century by Ugo di Toscana and it got wealthier thanks to the donations of many emperors who granted it privileges and the jurisdiction on many castles and territories to the detriment of Arezzo' s bishopric.
The town was always the target of the great powers because of its intermediate position among many valleys and Arezzo besieged and conquered it 1214. One and a half century later, more exactly in 1384, the Tarlati conquered the town and later it entered the dominions of the Florentine Republic in the ambit of the capitulation of Arezzo and of the nearby towns to Florence. Since Capolona belonged to this big Tuscan city, it was "condemned" to undergo the siege by Charles V' s Bourbon troops that executed pillages and devastations around 1527.
Later on, the village lived a period of peace and political stability exception made for Napoleon's short period of occupation in the Tuscan Grand Duchy. During the period the Hapsburg-Lorraine governed, the "comunitas" of Capolona reached its current extension. In effect, in 1845, it extended its borders to the hamlets of Lorenzano and Baciano, which had been taken away from Castel Focognano and Subbiano, and to some territories that had previously belonged to the town of Talla. Shortly after, Capolona entered the Kingdom of Italy with the Plebiscite of 1860.
Capolona has always been a noteworthy agricultural centre with an important strategic position and it has been able to become a very developed industrial centre in the XX century after the destructions of 1944's bombardments. It has centred its local production activity in the shoe and mechanical equipment sectors. Its closeness to Arezzo, furthermore, gave a strong boost to the growth of goldsmithery.
