Campo nell'Elba Tuscany

The municipality of Campo nell' Elba is in the south-west part of the Island of Elba, in a quite flat area going from the Lacona gulf until Pomonte, and it includes the island of Pianosa, too. Among the treasures of the municipality, there are the churches of St. Giovanni and St. Niccolò, dating to the XIII-XIV century, and the towers of Marina in Campo and St.Giovanni.

Campo nell' Elba has always been one of the most densely populated areas on the island and it was inhabited both in Prehistory and in the Roman times. The presence of the parish testifies the predominance of this chief town over the villages of St. Piero and St. Ilario since the Middle Ages. The reason of its importance lies into the granite caves of Secchetto that were the lucky of Campo nell' Elba' s inhabitants in every period of the past.
The island of Pianosa also makes part of the municipality of Campo nell' Elba and it has been inhabited since the most ancient times.
The passage of the Romans on the island left ineffaceable traces, starting from the toponym "Planasia", where its name originated from. Pianosa was conquered during the second Roman triumvirate between 43 and 34 A.D., when Sextus Pompeius wanted to conquer the whole archipelago. The remains of Agrippa's villa, Augustus's nephew who was exiled in Pianosa in 31 B.C. by his uncle, are still visible, but some archaeologists are evaluating some findings that could belong to a previous construction.
In the Middle Ages, Pianosa was part of the Pisa' s dominions. Therefore, the island was the target of continuous incursions and pillages by the Genoese navy. Furthermore, in the XVI century, it was totally depopulated because of the unremitting raids by the Saracenic pirates, whom Pisa was eventually unable to cope with.
From 1635 and thanks to the Tuscan Grand Duchy, the island of Pianosa was colonized again in order to start an intense farming activity off here. In 1856, it became a penal colony and it is still today. Currently, there are very few people on the island. It is included between the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago and fishing and shipping are forbidden within one-mile radius distance.
To get here, it is necessary to make a request to the park's management.
