The name of Campagnatico in the province of Grosseto is proud to have been the object of an illustrious citation. In effect, the town was named in the Divine Comedy by the famous poet Dante Alighieri. In the XI Canto of the Purgatory, Dante celebrates the figure of Omberto Aldobrandeschi, killed by the Sienese in 1249, in some lines.

The town of Campagnatico's origins date to the XI century. The church of St. John the Baptist, built in the XIII century, the more ancient church of Sant'Antonio Abate, dating to the early Middle Ages, and the church of Santa Maria can be admired here. This town of 2000 inhabitants, moreover, keeps some parts of the ancient Medieval walls called the Mura Aldobrandesche. The south-west side of the walls, and the circle, above all, was preserved thanks to its re-adaptation as a built-up area. The tower of the castle and the sighting turrets are visible, too.
The actual news about Campagnatico date to after 973, the year the Counts Aldobrandeschi of Lombard origins who governed the village upright until the first half of the XIII century and established their presence in the territory. Since 1249, the year Oberto was killed (as ordered by the Sienese to revenge a previous slight), the Tolomei settled the area thanks to Donusdeo who married the last heiress of the Adobrandeschi. In 1282, the Republic of Siena got possession of the city.
Campagnatico was uninterruptedly linked to Siena's history with the exception of a short time around 1363 when it was governed by mercenaries paid by Niccolò di Montefeltro. Since the first half of the XVI century, the Medici, the dynasty that led the Tuscan Grand Duchy, established their presence in the territory.
Nevertheless, Campagnatico manly benefited from the period of ruling of the Hapsburg-Lorraine during the Grand Duchy period. In effect, Pietro Leopoldo's reforms at the end of the XVIII century abolished the traditional latifundism and the town's urban structure recovered its ancient splendour with the restoration of decaying buildings and the start of numerous commercial businesses.
