Abetone Pistoia Tuscany

The town Pistoia lies by the river Ombrone, near the Apennine mountains, it's surrounded by long city walls with four gates. Through these gates you can get into the old city centre, where you can see the cathedral, the Bishop's palace and the "Sala", the town's oldest square.

This area preserves conifer woods, nature parks, mountain lakes and many medieval villages, where old traditions are still alive.
Amongst the most important centres we can mention: San Marcello Pistoiese, with its bridge Mammiano, connecting the two banks of the river Lima; Sierra Pistoiese with its parish church Furfalo, one of the oldest churches in this territory; Cutigliano, Piteglio and Marliana. The district of Pistoia includes the most famous ski resort of middle Italy: the Abetone, a 1400 Mt. high mountain, the ideal place for ski fans in winter and summer as well.
A lot of nature reserves are to be found in this area, amongst them the biogenetic reserves of Pian degli Ontani and Abetone, and the nature reserve by Capolino, where you can admire the famous red fir trees. Different paths and routes for trekking and horse riding are available here.
Important handcrafted products of this area are: potteries, padded furniture by Quarrata and the artistic manufacturing of bronze and copper.
